Wine enthusiasts might enjoy a summer vacation with a twist, visit as many wineries around the globe, or the country, as you possibly can. While you can still check out the Eiffel Tower or Big Ben, try to center a lot of the activities around wine. Flying around Europe might be expensive, but this doesn’t have to be a one time deal. Instead, it can be a lifelong goal.

Pick up a book about wineries located in specific states, countries, or regions and map out which one you need to visit. Imagine going to France, the 2nd largest wine producing country, and sipping on red wines straight from the vineyard. If you’re traveling globally, France and Spain should be at the top of your list, with Italy coming in third. But if you’re keeping this vacation to the states, there is no question that California is the place to go.

Take along a wine journal so you can record your experiences and keep track of which red and white wines delighted your taste buds and which made you cringe for a glass of water.

When you look at a bottle of wine, you may see “barrel fermented,” “bottle aged,” or “old vine.” You might have an idea of what this means but there is no correct definition for these terms and that might change. Wine makers love putting these terms on their bottles to try and distinguish their wine from the competition, but consumers don’t really know what the difference is.

Regulators now want to have clear and strict definitions of these terms which means you can’t just slap a term on your bottle of wine –and winemakers are not happy. One winemaker weighed in, “”It’s already time-consuming to get labels approved, so the more restrictions they put on, that’s an issue.” For example, the term “estate bottled” can only be used when certain criteria are met, i.e. where the grapes are grown. Some are angry that others use the word “estate” at all on their wine if they don’t follow this process.

We’ll see which side of the argument wine regulators fall on, but do these terms have any effect when you buy online wines?

Even if you do enjoy a glass of red wine every night with dinner, you don’t need to worry about counting those calories. But if you’re truly worried, read on.

Red wines tend to have very slightly lower calories because of the extra residual sugars in white wines. However, most view this residual sugar as negligible and the calorie intake is roughly the same, unless you have a very sweet dessert or ice wine. Most wines have about 25 calories per ounce. But no one drinks just once once of wine. The nutritional chart is usually based on 4 ounces, totaling 100 calories. However, most people actually fill their wine glass pretty high so you’re really looking at 125-150 calories per glass.

This is only an average though and some may want to know the exact amount. If you’re that concerned about your calorie intake, you can check out the official USDA Nutritional Database. Most of us don’t need to be worried. You won’t form a wine gut from a few glasses.

And I know that as the temperature continues to rise, the greater my thirst for rose wines. Yes, the often forgotten about style of wine is what I want and it’s what you should want too. Rose wines seem to get a bad rap. People want red in the winter and white in the summer, but what about pink?

Rose wines are similar in taste and texture to white wines. Therefore, they are best served chilled. But not all rose wines are as sweet as many believe they are. They can also be off-dry or bone dry. They are very versatile when it comes to food pairings. They go well with seafood and poultry, but they can tackle that steak you are feasting upon. They are perfect for those picnics in the park too. They go nicely with all types of meat sandwiches, fruit, and potato or egg salad.

So before you think about buying another bottle of white wine this summer, indulge in a blush wine and remember to always think pink all year long.

That may sound totally gross, but believe it or not, it can actually be very good for your grapes. Noble rot, real name Botrytis, is a fungus that typically occurs in the fall when cool, damp fog follows warm weather conditions. The grapes then become over-ripened and they shrivel like raisins on the vine. So what can be so good about this funky fungus? The fungus essentially causes the grapes to become dehydrated, which results in a higher concentration of sugar and acidity.

But winemakers have to watch this process carefully because the fungus can keep the yeast from converting enough sugar into alcohol, resulting in not enough alcohol content. Wines that are carefully made using noble rot will have aromas of honeysuckle, raisin, and dried fruit. They will also be intense, complex, sweet, and rich –making delicious dessert wines. Because of the skill required to make these wines, prices are often high, but you can still find decent bottles for under $30.

Many of these wines are made in France, Germany, and Austria. So try to find bottles of red wines and white wines using noble rot and add it to your list of “must-have wines.”

Passover will be here before you know it and you’ll definitely need to buy kosher wine for it. Passover this year is April 18-26th. During the Seder meal, four cups of wine must be drunk by both men and women. Each cup is drunk during different points of the meal. The first cup is taken during the recital of the Kiddush blessing. The next is after the retelling of the Passover story.

The last two cups of wine come later in the meal. The third cup comes during the blessing after eating the meal. Finally, the fourth cup is associated with the recital of the Hallel. Kosher wine is an important part of this holiday, as it is with many of the Jewish holidays. Online Kosher Wine has the largest selection of kosher wine on the Internet, so choose from one of many bottles and let it become an important part of your meal. Large family? You can receive $10 off your purchase of $100 or more.

Pairing red or white wines with chocolate of course! Since palates differ, there is no right or wrong pairings. Some people want a wine just as sweet as the chocolate, while others feel it is overkill. It will take some experimentation to find the best match, but a good rule of thumb is to match light chocolates with light wines and stronger chocolates with full bodied wines.

What about white chocolate? White chocolate has a mellow flavor and actually pairs really well with Sherry, a Moscato d’Asti, or an orange Muscat. They will blend well with the creaminess. However, if you’re looking to go for the opposite affect, try a Zinfandel which has more tannins. When dining on milk chocolate, you can pair it with a Pinot Noir, a light bodied Merlot, Riesling, sparkling wine, or a ruby Port –which is actually a classic match. When in doubt, go with the Port.

Dark chocolates will need a wine that can hold up to their rich and bittersweet flavors. Consider a robust Cabernet or a Zinfandel. A Pinot Noir or a Merlot are also great choices as well. Stock up a variety of kosher wine and let the chocolate tasting begin!

Despite the fact that fellow New Yorkers like to tease us Long Islanders for living out in the ‘burbs, they have to succumb to the fact that we have some amazing wineries. All of our wineries are located on the east end of the island (Suffolk county), on both the north and south forks.

Interestingly enough, we have only been in the wine business since 1975. In just a few decades, the wine business here boomed and there are now 56 official wineries on the island, totaling over 3,000 acres. Long Island’s geography and soil mix with the maritime climate to produce a delicious variety of wines. We produce both red wines and white wines, including, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Malbec, Merlot, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, and Shiraz.

The region has become quite an exciting one and wine producers from the area continue to garner more and more awards each year. New York is the 3rd largest wine region in America and over 1 million people visit Long Island wineries each year. If you’re in the neighborhood, stop by for some great wine!

What’s the point?” A better question you should be asking yourself is, “Why not?!” There are a lot of great reasons to purchase online wines. Quite possibly the best reason of them all is the convenience. You can make a purchase any time of day without having to ever step foot outside the house or even put on clothes. You can order your favorite bottle of Chardonnay at 3 a.m. in your pajamas while watching reruns of I Love Lucy.

Besides the beauty of convenience, you also have a much larger selection. The liquor store in your town might not be able to compete with the vastness of an online store. It might also be easier to find rare bottles of wine you are looking for. If it’s not a popular winemaker, less stores will carry it. However, if you’re going to purchase online, don’t just buy one bottle of wine. If you spend a certain amount of money, you can enjoy the benefit of free shipping and discounts. Look for coupons and sales –which most local stores don’t offer.

With so many great reasons, stop waiting around. Visit Online Kosher Wine today!
