The Online Kosher Wine Blog
Are you interested in throwing a wine tasting party? You could just buy a bunch of random bottles of red wines, but that might not be as fun as having a more organized event. There are actually several different types of wine tastings, but today we’ll just talk about vertical wine tasting. This type of tasting is when you try wines based on vintage year. You will taste one wine varietal from the same producer from several vintages.
You won’t be trying several different styles, but you will be learning just how important vintage can be. It will allow you to understand how weather patterns can truly affect the taste of a wine. It might be helpful to look up some background information on the winery. You can see if the producers changed the process slightly or if they had bad weather that year. It can explain why there are differences in the taste.
The purpose of vertical wine tasting is to learn how to taste subtle differences. Wines from different vintages might not taste dramatically different, but it will show you that vintage can and does matter. So gather up a few bottles of your favorite Baron Herzog and get tasting!
