Storing Your Red and White Wines

red winesEverybody just loves getting you a delicious bottle of Baron Herzog, but you just can’t drink them fast enough. Your collection of red and white wines is starting to become a nuisance. You’re long overdue for some new wine racks. So where’s the best place to store all of this delicious wine? Ever have the privilege of visiting a wine cave? Well, there’s a reason why wine is stored in there. Wine is best stored in cool, dark, and humid areas, a.k.a. the basement. Wine is best stored at 55 degrees. Constant fluctuations in temperatures are not good for the wine, though. Ideal humidity is 65-75%. Low humidity can shrink the cork and let oxygen in, which results in oxidation, which equals not so tasty wine.

Colored wine bottles have UV filters to block out light, but this doesn’t offer full protection. Never keep your bottles of wine in direct sunlight. It can cause premature aging and affect the taste of the wine. Keep your bottles still and sideways. Constant vibrations of the bottle will prevent the sediments in red wine from settling. Storing wine sideways will ensure that the cork is constantly moistened which prevents the cork from shrinking and letting in oxygen.

If you’re not fortunate enough to have your own wine cellar, the basement will do just fine. Don’t have a basement? You can store wine in a cool closet or invest in a wine refrigerator.
