Canadians Sure Do Love Their Wine

online winesA new study reports that Canadians are guzzling down red wines, white wines, and rose wines faster than most of the entire world. Their wine consumption is growing at a rate six times faster than the world average. Researchers looked at worldwide wine trends from 2005 to 2014. Between 2005 and 2009, Canada’s total wine consumption was 40.4 million cases, which is an increase of 22%. If this pattern continues, Canada is expected to increase their consumption to 49.7 million cases by 2014. That’s a lot of wine!

So how much is the rest of the world predicted to consume between 2010-2014? About 2.73 billion cases, which is only an increase of 3%. Although Canada does have its own wineries, they prefer to import wine. They are ranked 5th on a list of wine imports by volume. In 2009 alone, they imported 29 million cases. That number is expected to climb to 35 million by 2014 –an increase of 16%.

It appears Canada is making a lot of wine makers very happy and keeping them in business! Despite all the wine purchasing going on, it hasn’t had much affect on the economy. Hopefully it will begin to make an impact. Until then, cheers Canada for realizing how amazing wine is!
