Indulging in Wine This Winter
Just like hot cocoa is a staple of winter time, there are certain wines that are best experienced during these next few blustery months. The summer is all about light, crisp, and refreshing wines. The winter is best represented by rich, full-bodied wines –typically red wines. When shopping for online wines, make sure to add the following to your virtual shopping cart:
- Cabernet Sauvignon and Chateauneuf-du-Pape are both rich and complex with a hearty aroma. You can find both relatively cheap and don’t need to worry too much about vintage or brand.
- Although Riesling is a white wine with a fruity and crisp taste, its intense finish will pair well with a nice seafood lunch.
- Port is probably the best wine to drink during the winter with its hearty flavors. Port is aged in oak barrels with distilled spirits, usually cognac. (And we all know cognac is another great winter beverage!)
- Burgundies are the heaviest wines. They are not very sweet, but they are rich in flavor and will help keep you toasty warm.
- White wines are always associated with summer but you can find richer white wines that are perfect for those chilly evenings. Choose ones that are not as fruity and have more mineral and oak flavors instead.
