It’s hard to believe that a comic about wine could influence wine sales in Japan. It’s somewhat hard to believe, in fact, that there’s a comic about wine period.
And yet, there is. From red wines to rose wines to white wines, “The Drops of God,” technically considered a manga, follows Kanzaki Shizuku, son of the recently deceased, world-famous wine critic Kanzaki Yutaka who’s left behind a large collection of wine. In order to inherit the legacy, Shizuku must find 13 wines described in his father’s will. His main obstacle comes in the form of his adopted brother, Toomine Issei, also a well-known wine critic.
The live-action television adaptation is what seems to really be getting people. Jean-Pierre Amoreau, owner of the Château le Puy in southwestern France, was baffled when Japanese buyers began calling him last year to get a hold of his 2003 bottles of Bordeaux. “The Drops of God” uses the names of real wines and sellers, and his agent explained that in the final episode of the show, millions of Japanese had tuned in to find out what the final wine was — Amoreau’s Bordeaux — and decided they had to get their hands on it. Amoreau ended up deciding to discontinue sales of the wine until the hype died down.
