The Online Kosher Wine Blog
In the old days — and even still now, at smaller-scale or traditionally-minded businesses — grapes were stomped by foot in order to make red wines and white wines. Over the weekend, for the first time in North America, they were stomped by elephantine foot. The Wildlife Safari in Winston, Oregon and a local winery joined forces to help raise funds for the elephant conservation. The event allowed people to see a pair of elephants up-close, one of which — George — stomped grapes to make a white wine that will be ready in about two months and possibly named after Tiki, the Safari’s star elephant who recently passed away.
Not everyone makes out so well their first time stomping grapes, though. Despite his little experience, George made out far better than the poor newslady who took a tumble while stomping grapes a few years back.
I wonder if she knew then that that moment would become her legacy. At this point she could find a cure for cancer and newspapers would still refer to her as “the woman who cured cancer… and fell on her face on TV while trying to stomp grapes.”
